Empowerment Through Surfing: Beyond the Surface

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is offering "Beyond the Surface Blend". One dollar from every bag of this specialty roast sold at the coffee bar or online will benefit this cause. This Direct Trade blend was constructed from several small farmers that owner, Chuck Patton, works with in Cauca, Colombia.
Beyond the Surface is a non-profit working to eradicate youth homelessness in coastal communities and to empower street children through surfing and give children a chance to escape homelessness. Lifelong surfer and native La Jollan Emi Koch has turned her passion for surfing into a path to help others. At 20 years old she is founder and director of Beyond the Surface. The international nonprofit corporation's goal is to eradicate youth homelessness in coastal communities throughout the world, and empower homeless street children through the sport of surfing. Also a Georgetown Sophomore and Billabong Girls team rider Emi Koch, an inspiring advocate for social change. Koch said she started surfing at the age of two at Tourmaline Beach in Pacific Beach. Jeffrey, her dad, pushed her out into the water. Now at the age of 20, her skills earned her a spot on the Billabong Surf Team. Her intelligence took her from Our Lady of Peace High School to Georgetown University in Washington, DC and her determination has helped her go beyond the surface.
