Bird Rock’s poster child for a local, successful business

A great article about Bird Rock Coffee Roasters came out in the La Jolla Village News 3/25 by Adriane Tillman. The story describes how Bird Rock Coffee Roasters owner Chuck Patton turned his hobby into a business that has also become a social hub for neighbors at 5627 La Jolla Blvd. To read the article click here.
It's an inspiring example of how he found a niche in the competitive coffee industry (he's accross the street from Starbucks) and followed through on his vision. For the past two years, Patton has traveled to places like Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Columbia, Sumatra and Ecuador to build partnerships with individual farmers based on the quality of their beans. As residents have experienced, Patton has also made his shop a pillar of the local community. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters supports fundraisers at Bird Rock Elementary School, and donated space in the store for the Bird Rock History Museum. In addition,  promoted local artists and is working with the non-profit ArtReach to bring art to classrooms. You should also know, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters sells their beans onsite and online. Bird Rock Bench Beautification Project

Fourth installment is in progress for the Bird Rock Bench Beautification Project. Local artist and member of the Bird Rock Artist Guild, Jane Wheeler, is continuing "Art Alive" in Bird Rock, with the completion of bench #3 "Children are Our Future", located between Lupi Restaurant and Bahia on La Jolla Blvd. The other 2 benches can be viewed in front of Little Locks "Bird Rock by the Sea – in Blues" and in front of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters “ A Tribute to Joe Parker Sr”. She is starting to work on bench #4 “ Love Your Community”. The San Diego Reader recently profiled  the project.

Save the Date for the 4th Annual Bird Rock Tour of Homes

The Bird Rock Home Tour benefiting Bird Rock Elementary School will take place Saturday January 30th, 11:00-3:00. The six homes will be revealed on the day of the event. Ticket prices are: $25 per person $20 w/ BRCC membership. Bird Rock Community Council 2nd Annual Toy Drive

Please join Bird Rock residents in our second annual toy drive! Drop off a new unwrapped toy at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters 5627 La Jolla Boulevard, through December 22, 2009. The BRCC team will be distributing the toys to children of homeless families through one of the local agencies. If you are keeping your dollars local, please consider purchasing the toys from Little Locks Toy Boutique. It's conveniently located on same block, 5565 La Jolla Blvd., as Bird Rock Coffee Roasters where toys are being collected.

Bird Rock Historical Museum finds a home

Starting out as a history "project" seeking a temporary home has become a full-fledged museum with its own permanent residence. The new address for the soon-to-be community museum is a familiar one: Bird Rock Coffee Roasters at 5627 La Jolla Blvd. - more specifically, the organic coffee roaster's newsstand room, which owner Chuck Patton has offered for use as history museum/exhibit space.
News of Patton's offer of permanent exhibit space for a community museum was enthusiastically received by 37-year Bird Rock resident Philomene Offen, who just started documenting the La Jolla neighborhood's history in January.  Hopefully it will help trigger folks who have old photographs to be willing to share them with us," Patton said.
Residents who have old photographs of Bird Rock area are encouraged to share them long enough for copies to be made for display. For information or photo's to contribute please email Philomene Offen.
The new museum/exhibit space is planned to open by Thanksgiving.

Do you need less stress and more joy?

Find your folly, follow your bliss, get your joy back! You hear this and really want to act on. Well, I found there is no better way to have fun, connect with your neighborhood than to jump on a beach cruiser and ride around town. If you live in La Jolla and don’t own one, now is the off season and best time to buy. If you’re not sure you want to commit you can also rent a beach cruiser from Bird Rock Surf Shop. There are so many routes to choose from, the La Jolla bike path, and the coastal route from Windansea to La Jolla cove. Or going south to the Mission Beach Boardwalk or Mission Bay loop. Sundays are a wonderful day to clip on a basket and head over to La Jolla’s Farmers Market. I rode mine recently to Bird Rock Coffee Roasters for my latte (did you know you can add a cup holder!), then down to Calumet Park to enjoy the wind in my hair, smell the ocean air and hear all of the sounds of our neighborhood coming to life! It was all I needed to start my morning and feel inspired and connected.

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters Brews Success

It takes community to build a thriving business. NBC San Diego profiled San Diegans who have changed their professions and have started over. Former teacher and Bird Rock resident Chuck Patton learned some lessons of his own when he opened his successful coffee house in La Jolla.

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters had another of their exceptional coffees recognized. Ethiopia Sidama Amaro Gayo. Review Ken Davids states: Intense honey-like aroma, redolent of flowers and blueberry. Delicate in the cup with a soft, lightly syrupy mouthfeel. (I love this part) "Who should drink it: Refined adventurers!" 92 Points. We all have to try this extraordinary coffee before it's all gone!

Taste of Bird Rock July 16, 2009

The seventh annual Taste of Bird Rock. Part community mixer, part benefit, part merchant promotion and a whole bunch of fun! This family-friendly tasting event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight July 16 along La Jolla Boulevard between Midway Street and Camino de la Costa. Bird Rock Community Service Award

The Bird Rock Community Council presented the Bird Rock Community Service Award to Chuck Patton (Bird Rock Coffee Roasters). As well all know Chuck and his wife Elke never stop giving to the community and have created a central meeting place for Bird Rock. Save the Date Taste of Bird Rock-July 16th

It’s time to make plans, mark your calendars and save the date for the 7th annual Taste of Bird Rock 2009 neighborhood celebration and fundraiser. The boulevard will be buzzing with bands, retail will be open for business, and participating restaurants will be serving up local culinary creations for the July 16 event.
A raffle to win a yacht cruise and dinner for ten! Reynolds’ Communities has offered a cruise on the San Diego Bay aboard their 64 foot yacht for the lucky winner. Beaumont’s is providing the wine and dinner from their own chef Scott, and Lupi’s is providing the dessert and dessert wines. Raffle tickets are on sale at Beaumont's, Lupi's, La Jolla Mailbox, and Bird Rock Coffee Roasters now and are $5.00 each, or $20.00 for five tickets. The raffle proceeds benefit Bird Rock Elementary and sister school Cesar Chavez Elementary. “We know how much our own local school needs funding this year, and we also know that there are other schools in the district that are in desperate need of help too. We are trying to make a difference in as many ways as we can,” said the Taste of Bird Rock committee. Winner announced at Taste of Bird Rock, winner need not be present.
