Bird Rock Cookbook features close to 500 favorite recipes!

Bird Rock Community Cookbook

The Bird Rock Community Council's "Bird Rock Community Cookbook" is finished and ready for the printer. With an overwhelming response from residents, merchants, and those with longstanding ties to the neighborhood, the book features almost 500 favorite recipes, art by Jane Wheeler, and photography by Shirley Preis.
The book is available ONLY as a pre-order with proceeds from the $20 donation per book going to benefit Bird Rock Elementary school. To ensure arrival in time for the holidays, all cookbook orders must be received no later than Sunday, Sept. 19. Orders can be placed by using a credit card: go to www.birdrock.org, click on "Cookbook," and submit order via PayPal; or a check, made payable to "BRCC," including name, contact information (phone number AND email address,) and quantity of books.
Mail a check and information to BRCC, 5666 La Jolla Blvd, #168, La Jolla, CA 92037. Delivery date is late November. The cookbook committee said the book will make "a lovely keepsake," and stated its gratitude to all contributors.

"Birdstock" Summer Concert & Family Event

Come join family, friends and neighbors to celebrate our community Saturday, September 11th, from 4-7 pm at Bird Rock Elementary Park. Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated. All proceeds will benefit Bird Rock Elementary.There will be live bands, food and drinks (for purchase). Bring a blanket or beach chair, but please no pets.

Temporary Community Art Installation

Also, bring a flower petal or natural element to add to our Temporary Community Art Installation. “A Tribute to Andy Goldsworthy”. Inspired by Bird Rock 6th Grader & artist Eric Haer. In addition a chance to create fused glass tiles to adorn the new ramp to the park (5 for $20).

Bird Rock Community Wall

This fall the BRCC will be working on a community art project, the "Bird Rock Community Wall", at the Wavery Street Gate Entrance. The community is encouraged to get involved and leave your mark by purchasing a commemorative tile for the wall. You can choose either a large or small tile to memorialize your family name, pet or organization. “In memory of” tiles will also be available. All proceeds will benefit Bird Rock Elementary School. Email Pamela Garvey or Jane Wheeler for a tile order form.

Lastly, "The Bird Rock Community Cookbook" is taking pre-orders through September 19th.

A Caution to Local Dog Owners: Unfriendly Plants on the Bike Path

The following information is for neighbors who have dogs and walk the bike path stretching between Nautilus Street in La Jolla and La Jolla Hermosa Avenue in Bird Rock.
Two dogs were recently poisoned by Century Plants on the west side of the bike path (off Via De Norte). The plants have expanded into a large grove, and are a member of the agave family (large, bluish with sharp thorns on the ends of the leaves).
Squirrels hide in these plants and dogs who chase them can get the very toxic juices on their fur, ingest it and become extremely sick. One of these dogs sadly did not survive and the other required extensive emergency care and hospitalization. Keep your dogs away from these plants they are extremely toxic!

As many of you know, Cass Street Café had to temporarily close for repairs following Sunday's tragic accident. The Café will re-open for business today. 31st Annual 2010 Beaumont Avenue 4th of July Celebration!

"The circus is coming, the circus is coming..." The mystery, magic and fun of the circus comes to Bird Rock. Get ready to clown around and start planning for our 4th of July Celebration. Be a part of the Three Ring Circus and parade down Beaumont Avenue with your decorated float, bike, trike, skateboard etc. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the procession, so keep the theme in mind and be creative. Come join the celebration and remember to keep your entry traveling under 1 mph (no motorized vehicles). Beaumont Avenue residents, remember to decorate your homes and yards. THE 4th of July Procession will begin at Camino de la Costa and end at the cul-de-sac behind the Methodist Church. At the end of the parade, there will be great music & great food (hot dogs, popcorn, water and homemade cookies). The band The Sophisticats are back this year!
This event is special to all of us living in the Bird Rock community. It provides that slice of Americana that we all enjoy, particularly when celebrating the anniversary of our country's independence. This parade needs your help. Bird Rock Elementary to celebrate 'Distinguished' status

Bird Rock Elementary School will celebrate its designation as a State of California "Distinguished School" May 27th during an open house at the school at 5371 La Jolla Hermosa Ave. starting at 5:30 p.m.
It is the school's way of thanking and honoring neighborhood residents and local merchants for contributing to the school through fundraisers such as Taste of Bird Rock and other activities that have aided the school in building its solid academic reputation.
Festivities will start out in the auditorium where guests will sit on new chairs provided by proceeds from the Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) home tour.
Afterward, all classrooms, including the Science Lab, Art Room, Library and Computer Lab, will be open for touring. Other events will include an art walk and celebratory popsicles in the lunch arbor.

Calumet Park Stairway Proposed for Beach Access

Bird Rock has a beautiful, tranquil coastline, but it’s difficult to access. Bird Rock resident Claudia Anderson is a surfer who would like to see more access points to the coastline. She proposes building a staircase at Calumet Park to enable more people to visit the tide pools in Bird Rock. A well-worn dirt path currently leads from the park down to the beach. Anderson aired her suggestion at the Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) meeting on March 2. “The question is, ‘What is Bird Rock?’” Anderson said. “We’re not just restaurants and shops. People are missing the fact that we have a great natural resource in our backyard — tide pools. Access to the beach will help bring people to visit Bird Rock.
The city needs to secure all the funding for the project before it can begin construction, which is estimated to start in late 2011. To voice your opinion about building a staircase at Calumet Park e-mail brcc@san.rr.com.

Is the Taste of Bird Rock event too successful?

The Taste of Bird Rock has become so successful that the Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) is considering suspending the fund-raiser this year in an effort to tone down the party. “The good news is that the Taste of Bird Rock is wildly successful,” said BRCC President Joe Parker at the group’s Feb. 2 meeting. “The bad news is that it is wildly successful.”
This neighborhood party is family oriented and offers many fun-filled activities. At this fundraising event, attendees have enjoyed various bands as they stroll La Jolla Boulevard sampling food specialties from nearby restaurants and receiving discounts to local merchants.
Police have taken note of the increased foot traffic and drinking, and informed the BRCC that it needs to step up its security and traffic control, measures that would also spike the costs to run the event, Parker said.
“The goal is to interface residents with merchants and to raise funds,” Parker said. “When you have to fence off areas, the costs escalate and it becomes counterproductive.”
The Taste of Bird Rock, typically held in July, started in 2002 to promote area restaurants and continued as a fund-raiser for Bird Rock Elementary School.

Save the Date for the 4th Annual Bird Rock Tour of Homes

The Bird Rock Home Tour benefiting Bird Rock Elementary School will take place Saturday January 30th, 11:00-3:00. The six homes will be revealed on the day of the event. Ticket prices are: $25 per person $20 w/ BRCC membership. Holiday fundraiser goal reached to preserve La Jolla's Holiday Banners and Street Light Decorations!

Last summer La Jollan's joined together to light up the skies to celebrate the fourth of July.
Now the grass-roots drive to light up the streets of La Jolla to celebrate the holidays has met it's goal.
This year we will again have the "Happy Holidays" banner on the overpass on Torrey Pines Road and the street light decorations and banners in the Village*.
Also, don't miss this years La Jolla Christmas Parade.

La Jolla Christmas Parade is coming, and Bird Rock needs your help to build our float!

Are any residents interested in crafting a Bird Rock Community Council/Bird Rock float for the La Jolla Christmas Parade, Sunday December 6th? Time is running out, the registration deadline is Nov 17th.

Bird Rock Community Council is getting the word out that once again an all-out effort is being made to guarantee a safe and secure Halloween Saturday Oct. 31. Residents handing out Halloween treats are being asked to do so only from 5 to 8 p.m. Though voluntary, it was noted that restricting hours on Halloween helped cut down on problems. This effort has been met with an overwhelming amount of support by residents. So if you’re participating, please turn your lights off at 8 p.m.. Halloween is the busiest night of the year for police.

First annual Bird Rock Oktoberfest Community Picnic at Calumet Park! Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy great food, your friends and neighbors and a beautiful sunset. This Tuesday, October 6, 5:30 - 7:00 pm.

Taste of Bird Rock July 16, 2009

The seventh annual Taste of Bird Rock. Part community mixer, part benefit, part merchant promotion and a whole bunch of fun! This family-friendly tasting event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight July 16 along La Jolla Boulevard between Midway Street and Camino de la Costa. Bird Rock Community Service Award

The Bird Rock Community Council presented the Bird Rock Community Service Award to Chuck Patton (Bird Rock Coffee Roasters). As well all know Chuck and his wife Elke never stop giving to the community and have created a central meeting place for Bird Rock. Farmers Market coming to Bird Rock?

A farmers market may be coming to Bird Rock this summer. At last week's Bird Rock Community Council meeting, Philomene Offen, a member of the Bird Rock Seaside Market Committee, said that the third week of June has tentatively been targeted as the start-up date for the new market. It would be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Fridays so as not to compete with the existing La Jolla farmers market held on Sundays at La Jolla Elementary School. Anne McBee, market co-chairwoman, said it will be a "very small, intimate market really only geared toward the Bird Rock Community." It's been suggested that it could be held near the Starbucks-anchored strip mall at 5604 La Jolla Blvd. Work to do McBee stressed that the new farmers market is very much a grassroots effort in its formative stages. "There are many steps we have to go through," she said, "including getting permits from the city." McBee added that the committee has been working with consultants to research what other farmers markets have done. She said the committee is looking for volunteers. The next committee meeting will likely be at the end of April and will be listed on BRCC's website. An update on the farmers market will be given at May's BRCC meeting.
