Farmers Market coming to Bird Rock?

A farmers market may be coming to Bird Rock this summer. At last week's Bird Rock Community Council meeting, Philomene Offen, a member of the Bird Rock Seaside Market Committee, said that the third week of June has tentatively been targeted as the start-up date for the new market. It would be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Fridays so as not to compete with the existing La Jolla farmers market held on Sundays at La Jolla Elementary School. Anne McBee, market co-chairwoman, said it will be a "very small, intimate market really only geared toward the Bird Rock Community." It's been suggested that it could be held near the Starbucks-anchored strip mall at 5604 La Jolla Blvd. Work to do McBee stressed that the new farmers market is very much a grassroots effort in its formative stages. "There are many steps we have to go through," she said, "including getting permits from the city." McBee added that the committee has been working with consultants to research what other farmers markets have done. She said the committee is looking for volunteers. The next committee meeting will likely be at the end of April and will be listed on BRCC's website. An update on the farmers market will be given at May's BRCC meeting.

Save the Date Taste of Bird Rock-July 16th

It’s time to make plans, mark your calendars and save the date for the 7th annual Taste of Bird Rock 2009 neighborhood celebration and fundraiser. The boulevard will be buzzing with bands, retail will be open for business, and participating restaurants will be serving up local culinary creations for the July 16 event.
A raffle to win a yacht cruise and dinner for ten! Reynolds’ Communities has offered a cruise on the San Diego Bay aboard their 64 foot yacht for the lucky winner. Beaumont’s is providing the wine and dinner from their own chef Scott, and Lupi’s is providing the dessert and dessert wines. Raffle tickets are on sale at Beaumont's, Lupi's, La Jolla Mailbox, and Bird Rock Coffee Roasters now and are $5.00 each, or $20.00 for five tickets. The raffle proceeds benefit Bird Rock Elementary and sister school Cesar Chavez Elementary. “We know how much our own local school needs funding this year, and we also know that there are other schools in the district that are in desperate need of help too. We are trying to make a difference in as many ways as we can,” said the Taste of Bird Rock committee. Winner announced at Taste of Bird Rock, winner need not be present.

  • You keep dollars in our economy. For every $100 you spend at one of our local businesses, $68 will stay in the community.

  • You help the environment. Buying from a local business conserves fuel.

  • You nurture community. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains.

If you live in La Jolla you often have guests!

For one of the best places to take them, try "The Cottage”. Known for their Southern California cooking. For example, dishes like the "Carne Asada Benedict" are sure to impress. For those who have not been it is a beautifully remodeled historic beach cottage built in the 1920's. This is a great place to dine on the patio and enjoy the weather. You can also send them home with a souvenir cookbook! Close to the La Jolla Cove and in La Jolla Village. It's a very popular place for breakfast so come early! For more details visit their website.
