One of the stars of "Endless Summer," to discuss book

Mike Hynson will discuss his book "Mike Hynson: Transcendental Memories of a Surf Rebel" at 7 p.m. April 17 at D.G.Wills Books, 7461 Girard Ave., La Jolla. The book is a who's who of 1950s and '60s culture - with names such as Duke Kahanamoku, Hobie Alter, Bruce Brown, the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, Timothy Leary, Jimi Hendrix - and is a gritty portrayal of Hynson's adventurous frolic spanning three decades questioning, exploring and breaking new ground. He is also one of the stars of "Endless Summer," the iconic film from Bruce Brown, Hynson writes that he lived his entire life on the edge - from his formative years as a Navy brat in the 1940s and '50s bouncing between Hawaii and San Diego, to his timing and innovation that kept him at the forefront of the surfing industry throughout the '60s. Hynson helped found the legendary WindanSea Surf Club in 1962; and planted the seed in Tom Morey's head for the Boogie Board in 1965.

Summers coming... get gorgeous & toned

Have you heard of the Pure Barre Technique? Last week I had the opportunity to try at their La Jolla village studio. Pure Barre is a total body workout. It combines the best elements of Pilates and Lotte Berk exercises with dance for an incredibly intense workout. This is the same method Sex & the City actress, Sarah Jessica Parker, uses to stay fit. Benefits include, lifts your seat, tones your thighs and burns fat in record-breaking time. Students see results in just 10 classes. I also learned that it can help new moms bounce back after having a baby.
To try out Pure Barre, there’s no better opportunity than with a BuyWithMe voucher that offers $25 to for 2 Pure Barre Classes (a $50 value). Summers coming, join me to get fit & toned!

Erosion Impacting Bird Rock Neighborhood Landmark and Namesake

This weeks La Jolla Light newspaper interviewed Bird Rock Resident, Don Schmidt, about the erosion impacting "Bird Rock". The Bird Rock neighborhood's namesake geological formation is offshore at the end of Bird Rock Avenue. "One of these days, there's going to be a big wave that comes in, and when it does, the rock is going to collapse," predicted Schmidt, a Bird Rock resident and La Jolla Historical Society member who has watched the rock literally "washing away" the last couple of years." Are you ready Bird Rock?

Yesterday a 7.2 earthquake occurred south of San Diego in Baja Mexico. It was felt throughout Southern California, especially here in San Diego. For full report click here. My husband and I happened to be grocery shopping at Vons Pavillion during the quake. However, the kids were home and this made us realize we had not created our disaster plan in case of such an emergency. I'm including here some information & tips I found. Ready San Diego has tips and resources to help prepare for an emergency including earthquakes. In addition, SDG&E has helpful tips to prepare you for emergencies. In addition a real time Outage Map. During the month of April, which is Earthquake Preparedness Month, the Red Cross would like to remind the community to have a family disaster plan to ensure that all family members know what to do, where to go and who to call in case of a disaster. The Red Cross recommends that everyone have an emergency disaster kit at home, in the car and at work or school.. More tips from the Red Cross.

La Jolla's Google entry is in

La Jollan Adam Harris and more than 194,000 other communities had responded by Friday's deadline for initial applications to be part of Google's "Fiber for Communities" initiative. La Jolla will be up against in its effort to get the company to install a super high-speed network in the community. It noted that they'd seen "cities rename themselves, great YouTube videos, public rallies and hundreds of grassroots Facebook groups come to life. In the coming months, Google say it will narrow down the choices, announcing communities by the end of the year.

A Better Deal Tuxedos received a “Best of La Jolla” award

For the second year in a row, A Better Deal Designer Tuxedos and Suits, located at 369 Bird Rock Ave., has received a “Best of La Jolla” award in the Tuxedos and Suits category from the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA). Each year, the USCA recognizes companies nationwide that “enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community,” according to a press release.
Owners Jerry and Janet Klein have been in the tuxedo business for more than 30 years, and they have spent half that time at their present location. Jerry said that the duo’s personal attention to customers and control over their products sets their business apart from their competitors, which are primarily large chain stores.
